We are currently seeking a Virology Research Scientist for the Frederick, Maryland area.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Contractor shall assist with the Alphavirus Animal Model Development Program, to include management and training of postdoctoral scientist and contract technicians. The position will also be writing intensive as the individual will assist with preparation of grants for submission/funding in addition to quarterly reports describing the status of projects to appropriate funding agencies.
2. Contractor shall perform research on viral pathogenesis under BSL-3 containment.
3. Contractor shall design, conduct and evaluate research studies to elucide the critical determinants of pathogenesis for viruses of military importance.
4. Contractor shall research areas including molecular virology and host responses to viral infection. In particular, evaluates the mechanisms by which BSL-3 viruses cause disease using both in vitro and in vivo systems in order to characterize and evaluate effective countermeasures.
5. Contractor shall be familiar and assist in conducting procedures including real-time RT-PCR, qRT-PCR, western blot, plaque assay, plaque reduction neutralization titer assay, ELISA (enzyme-linked immunoassay), elispot assay, flow cytometry, cytokine analysis (Bioplex or MesoScaleDiscovery analysis), and immunohistochemistry.
6. Contractor shall be familiar with performing anesthesia, phlebotomy, and treatment on small and large animals infected with BSL-3 agents.
7. Contractor shall assist in the establishment and coordination of extramural collaborations and contracts to augment the research program he or she directs.
8. Contractor shall be able to maintain a safe workplace and comply with occupational health and safety rules and regulations. Contract employee is required to attend safety training(s) relative to his/her position and report any infractions of safety procedures to the TOCOR immediately.
9. Contractor must complete mandatory Federal, DoD, Army, and USAMRIID training as required.
10. May require variable work schedules (second shift) and occasional weekends in order to accomplish time sensitive laboratory tasks.
11. Contractor will be required to conduct studies at Bio-safety Level 2 and Bio-safety Level 3 (BSL 2 and BSL 3).
12. In order to safely carry out the laboratory research mission, certain FDA licensed vaccines will be required to be taken.
13. Contractor will be required to be enrolled in the Army Biological Personnel Reliability Program .
Requirements
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Position requires a Ph.D., Biology, Pathology, Microbiology or Immunology + 4 years experience.
2. Individual MUST show proficiency in laboratory and animal experimental execution.
3. Biosafety Level 3 (BSL 3) containment experience preferred.
4. Must be able to work independently following a brief period of specific technical training.
