Associate Director, Disease Biology and Translational Medicine
OVERALL SUMMARY OF POSITION:
The position calls for someone with a strong disease biology and target biology background. This individual will have training and demonstrated success in one or more of the following: functional in vitro cell biology/pharmacology, in vivo pharmacology, and/or biomarker discovery/development. The candidate will serve as a part of a high performing team and use their preclinical in vitro/in vivo biology to advance therapeutic antibody discovery and development. They will design, manage, and execute experiments using established and novel methods to interrogate the pharmacological properties of XOMA’s therapeutic antibody candidates. The candidate will function as a part of multidisciplinary teams to advance preclinical and early stage clinical development, as needed. Functionally, this position may manage scientist and/or RAs. They will support multiple programs and enable therapeutic development through the elucidation of target/drug interactions and efficacy in cell based and animal based models of disease.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
• Help manage/manage preclinical in vitro/in vivo pharmacology or biomarker discovery/development efforts
•Able to lead core teams and/or target evaluation efforts
•Design, execute, and analyze in vitro, ex vivo, and/or in vivo experiments, interpret data, and present conclusions within the company as well as outside
•Develop, manage and execute studies to evaluate target biology and advance products
•Work on complex problems and bring scientific expertise to bear in finding creative solutions
•Evaluate new assays or technologies and set up, adjust, operate, and maintain laboratory equipment and instruments in a multi-disciplinary setting
•Perform all experiments with best laboratory practices and follow all XOMA policies and safety regulations
•Evaluate new targets and provide scientific input within a disease area
•Participate in evaluation and identification of collaborators and contract facilities as required and work with them for conducting studies and analyzing and presenting results
•Work independently and write research reports, and papers for publication in peer reviewed journals, invention disclosures and patents, as well as helping write regulatory documents as needed
•Excellent written and verbal communication skills
•Keep organized and accurate records
OTHER DUTIES:
• Maintain familiarity with current scientific literature for multiple disease areas and be able to identify/integrate new technologies and/or methods as needed
•Represent the company at scientific and professional meetings and conferences
•Analyze high content data sets using latest software and communicate results clearly; keep abreast the latest methodologies; ensure completion of studies required for IND filings and other necessary documents.
SUPERVISORY DUTIES:
•May manage, train and supervise scientists and research associates directly and/or in a matrixed environment
QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS
Education and/or experience:
• PhD in Pharmacology or Cell Biology or another relevant disease area with 10+ years of industry in the biotechnology/pharma industry with cell based or animal models
•Requires a strong scientific background and excellent technical skills, with demonstrated experience in an area of disease biology, multiple disease areas preferred - including oncology, metabolism, or inflammation.
•Has established history of accomplishment as evidenced by success in the lab, advancing therapeutic programs, and by a track record of innovation and publication.
Special skills/knowledge:
• Demonstrated expertise in cell based assay systems or in vivo pharmacology to elucidate disease biology or therapeutic mechanisms of action is required; expertise in biomarker discovery and development is a plus
•Experience with bringing new product candidates through preclinical development and advancing projects
•Strong and effective oral and written communication skills; exceptional teamwork skills and the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously
•Possess leadership skills
•Proactive and systematic in their approach and critically analyzes and contextualizes data to enable strategic decisions at multiple levels: project teams; preclinical strategy discussions; and corporate/partnering discussions.
