Associate Engineer

Job Summary

This position will support the development and scale-up of novel processes for the production of chemicals via fermentation. Technical areas of responsibility span fermentation and downstream separation steps such as filtration, centrifugation, chromatography, extraction, and distillation. He/she will design and execute experiments at lab and pilot scale, analyze data, document results, and communicate findings and recommendations for follow-up actions to other members of the team.



Responsibilities include:
•Support the development of cost effective methods for the production of chemicals via fermentation
•Design and execute experiments at lab and pilot scales to demonstrate new technology and determine unit op performance
•Set-up, operate, and maintain lab/pilot scale equipment
•Evaluate experimental performance by monitoring on-line parameters, sampling, taking off-line measurements, and accurate logging of data and observations
•Analyze, document, and communicate results to other members of the team
•Support lab, demo plant, and commercial operations by performing technical support activities and data analysis
•Develop standard operation procedures (SOPs) to ensure safe and efficient operation of equipment, create and maintain and batch data collection and analysis spreadsheets
•Assist in the creation of process flow diagrams, mass and energy balances, and process cost estimates; review commercial engineering documents
•Contribute technical expertise to group and project team meeting
•Other duties may be assigned

Desired Skills and Experience


Qualifications/Requirements include:
•A Bachelors degree in chemical engineering, biochemical engineering, or related field
•0-2 years of relevant industrial experience
•Solid understanding of basic chemical engineering principles
•Ability to correctly interpret data, analyze results, apply findings toward practical actions, and communicate results to others in the organization
•Able to thrive in a high-energy, dynamic, team-driven work environment
•Strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and strong computer skills (MS Office Suite)
•Ability and mechanical aptitude to operate lab and pilot scale equipment
•Good interpersonal and communication skills (oral and written)
•Some shift work and travel may be required for this position
•Able to safely lift 30 lbs.
