Bioinformatics Scientist

Job Description
Position Summary:

The department of Informatics is seeking a talented and motivated individual to provide analytical and algorithm support for product development efforts in the determination of copy number, somatic mutation and genotyping data. This exciting position will work closely with Affymetrix scientists in the analysis and interpretation of DNA microarray data from different technologies, the development of novel algorithms as well as statistical data analysis.



Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

Designs, develops, tests, maintains and applies existing tools for the analysis of copy number and somatic mutation data.

Develops algorithms for evaluating the quality of genotypes associated with SNPs, samples, and datasets for data filtering and troubleshooting.

Develops novel statistical approaches for analyzing data.

Works with large complex data sets and gathers and analyzes data from public and proprietary databases

Participates as the data analysis representative in project teams for development of novel products.

Communicates analytical approaches and results to expert audiences at internal and external scientific meetings.

Works closely with other Affymetrix departments including assay development, software development and legal.

Creates specifications and tools for analysis

Participates in process and operation improvement opportunities

Responds to internal and external inquiries

Education:

Bachelor’s or Master’s

PhD

Competencies: (skills, knowledge, abilities

Degree in Statistics, Computer Science, Physics, Mathematics or Genome Science, with a firm background in applied data analysis.

Advanced programming skills in

C/C++

One of R, S, Splus, SAS or Matlab

Scripting language such as Perl, or Python

Excellent communication skills

Strong initiative and demonstrated ability to take ownership of challenging problems.

Ability to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team.

Experience in analysis of microarray data and probe design considered a strong plus.

Experience in statistical genetics a plus.
