The role of a Business Intelligence (BI) Developer is to write, code, test, and analyze reports and their data sources, software programs and applications within the Business Intelligence space. This includes researching, designing, documenting, and modifying report data sources and/or software specifications throughout the production life cycle.
The BI Developer will also analyze and amend data source and/or software errors in a timely and accurate fashion, and provide status reports where required.


Assists with Business Intelligence development initiatives by defining, designing, and developing reporting data sources, reports, dashboards, and metrics as specified.

Analyzes, develops for and supports commercial software packages and tools (such as Cognos, Sagent, OBIEE, Oracle CRM, etc.) that include BI; Extract, Transform, Load (ETL); and/or reporting components.

Strong knowledge of data modeling, Data Warehouse architecture, and current Data Warehouse strategies.

Collaborates with analysts and designers in the design/development and initiation of new reporting data sources and reports, software programs, and applications.

Cultivates and disseminates knowledge of Business Intelligence strategies, data modeling, Data Warehouse architecture and concepts, and application development best practices.

Stays up-to-date with current and emerging Business Intelligence, data modeling and Data
Warehouse concepts and solutions.

Administers critical analysis of unit testing results and deliver solutions to critical areas.

Liaises with network administrators, systems analysts, and software engineers to assist in resolving problems with report data sources and reports, software products or company software systems.

May recommend, schedule, and perform software improvements and upgrades.

May participate in the quality assurance of program logic, data processing, and error resolution.

May run and monitor software performance tests on new and existing programs for the purposes of correcting errors, isolating areas for improvement, and general debugging.

May assist in defining report data source and/or software development project plans, including scoping, scheduling, and implementation.

May write, translate, and code software programs and applications according to specifications.

Other duties as assigned or as situation dictates.


Overtime hours may be required to meet project deadlines.

Some travel may be required.


College diploma or university degree in the field of computer science, information science, management information systems, or business administration and 3 to 5 years related work experience.

Strong knowledge of current Business Intelligence and Data Warehouse concepts.

Strong knowledge in Cognos Suite, including Framework Manager, Report Studio, Analysis Studio and Transformer development tools or comparable experience on a Business Intelligence development suite.

Working technical knowledge of applicable programming languages and commercial software packages commensurate with number of years’ experience.

Working knowledge of network and PC operating systems.

Strong analytical and problem solving skills.

Excellent written and oral communication skills, listening and interpersonal skills.

Experience with conducting research into systems issues and products as required.

Experience with communicating ideas in both technical and user-friendly language.

Keen attention to detail.

Proven analytical and creative problem-solving abilities.

Experience with effectively prioritize and execute tasks in a high-pressure environment.

Strong customer service orientation.

Experience working in a team-oriented, collaborative environment.
