Role Purpose/Accountabilities:

-To lead a chemical development team in the generation and improvement of manufacturing processes for new and existing products and technical support of manufacturing processes and projects to achieve HS&E, capacity and cost targets as defined by the Supply Chain leadership.

Accountabilities:

-Identify and progress development initiatives to improve technological and manufacturing capability, cost and HSE performance, under the direction of the +1 Manager, in support of the techno-commercial strategy of the Supply Chain.

-Identify and progress development initiatives, to implement technology and IP strategies, exploring alternative routes, technologies and options for low cost manufacture for products and intermediates. Monitor external IP developments in areas of responsibility and identify and progress appropriates responses.

-Plan and control laboratory work, semi-technical and full scale plant trials to develop and test new and improved manufacturing processes in order to meet agreed Supply Chain/ targets, managing process change to ensure product is fit for use versus registration and formulation.

-Control the provision of technical support to the manufacturing area and investigate and develop solutions to the more intractable chemical problems encountered in manufacture in order to achieve continued improvement of production performance.

-Communicate with commercial, research, manufacturing, development and HSE functions and participate in works and Supply Chain teams in order to define and progress development plans.

-Participate in capital project teams as the representative of the chemical function to ensure that new products and processes are developed and established safely and effectively to meet Supply Chain cost, time and quality targets.

-Develop, train and coach subordinates to improve their performance and achieve higher professional standards.


Knowledge, Skills & Experience:

Critical knowledge: :

-Minimum BS Chemistry; PhD preferred.

-Detailed knowledge and awareness of systems for process change and the potential implications on product quality - formulation, regulatory, etc.HSE: Knowledge of systems and QA procedures and responsibility for compliance.

-Corporate knowledge and intellectual property: Fully aware of Syngenta and external prior art on existing processes and associated chemistry and patents in areas of responsibility.

-Awareness of the importance of the latter.

-Supply Chain and financial awareness: Knowledge of costing systems, budgeting, financial targets and of the impact of T&E development work on Supply Chain performance.

-Safety and QA procedures: knowledge of application of relevant procedures.

Critical experience:

-Minimum of 5 years experience in a chemical manufacturing environment.

-Extensive knowledge and experience in process development, critical data analysis (statistics / experimental design), scale-up, plant establishment, manufacturing support.

-Comprehensive experience and knowledge of laboratory/analytical work to enable realistic work targets to be set.

-Staff supervision, target setting, training and development.

-Communication: Ability to convey the right level of detail to the right audience verbally, in writing, or by presentations and ability to judge when and who to communicate key information.

-Networking: Able to maintain and extend contact networks internally, in academia and in professional organizations, to be aware of the latest developments in technology and methodology.

-Patents: Ability to recognize invention and initiate patent protection after discussion with the Supply Chain.
