Role Purpose/Accountabilities:
The primary roles of the Computational Biologist include implementing statistical and mathematical methods and performing statistical modeling in a highly team-oriented environment that supports Native Trait Project Leaders and associated project team members. The ability to develop software for Enterprise solutions is also desirable.
Accountabilities: Implementation of statistical methods including: multiple linear regression, analysis of variance, categorical analysis, random and mixed effects models, time series analysis, survival analysis, Bayesian methods, and multivariate analysis of variance.
Applications of mathematical methods for statistical analysis including: basic matrix algebra, eigen values and eigenvector, quadratic forms, vector and matrix differentiation, unconstrained optimization, constrained optimization, and applications in multivariate statistical analysis.
Statistical modeling: Exploratory data analysis, hierarchical models, mixture models, nonparametric Bayesian and maximum likelihood analysis, advanced hierarchical models and latent-variable models, generalized linear models; and nonlinear regression.
Software development for large data sets, intensive business processes, integration of a variety of systems within and outside of Syngenta, parallel computing, distributed and grid computing, visualization and data mining.
Fully participate as a member of multi-disciplinary project teams (Intellectual Property, licensing, markers, genomics, breeding, IT/IS, etc.) to develop products and extract value from genetic information initiatives.
Participate in the continuous gathering of specifications and requirements for emerging
Information Systems and utilities and facilitate the subsequent implementation.
Active team member of a group of scientists representing the disciplines association genetics and data mining.
Knowledge, Skills & Experience: Ph.D. and at least 2 years experience in a relevant area such genetics, applied statistics, statistical modeling or computational biology.
Demonstrated ability to work with large data sets.
A thorough knowledge of breeding theory and population, quantitative and transmission genetics and their application to experimental designs, descriptive and test statistics, genetic gain theory, genetic models, QTL and linkage mapping, linkage disequilibrium, association mapping and biotechnology.
Understanding of molecular genetics (methods and approaches) is a plus.
Firm understanding of a large range of state-of-the-art genotyping platforms and their possible applications.
Critical knowledge: :
Expertise in implementation of statistical methods, mathematical methods for statistical analysis, statistical modeling, and software development.

PLEASE NOTE: The position can be located in either Stanton, MN or Durham, NC.
All applicants must be eligible to work in the US.
