Regeneron is a fully integrated biopharmaceutical company that discovers, develops, and commercializes medicines for the treatment of serious medical conditions. In addition to ARCALYST (rilonacept) Injection for Subcutaneous Use, its first commercialized product, Regeneron has therapeutic candidates in Phase 3 clinical trials for the potential treatment of gout, diseases of the eye (wet age-related macular degeneration and central retinal vein occlusion), and certain cancers. Additional therapeutic candidates are in earlier stage development programs in rheumatoid arthritis and other inflammatory conditions, pain, cholesterol reduction, allergic and immune conditions, and cancer.
The position of head of Immune and Inflammatory Diseases (I&I) is of highest importance for the future portfolio of innovative immuno-modulatory drugs at Regeneron. The head will lead the Therapeutic Focus Area (TFA) group's target discovery and validation efforts, as well as nonclinical evaluation of drug candidates in animal models. He/she should will provide input into the I&I TFA portfolio in discovery and early development and directly manage a team of approximately 25 PhD scientists and research associates. As a manager with the highest scientific credentials the Director of Immune and Inflammatory Disease Reseach needs to be a natural leader able to motivate and inspire others.
The TFAs at Regeneron have access to Regeneron's industry-leading technologies for target validation (VelociGene and VelociMouse), antibody generation (VelocImmune) and protein production (VelociMab).
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
-Provides strategic, focused, innovative and flexible leadership towards the TFA goals in dialog with the VP of Target Discovery, SVP of Research and President/CSO.
-Supervises and coordinates scientists and research assocociates in the execution and design of experiments to discover and validate new targets relevant to human immune and inflammatory diseases, and for assessing the efficacy of drug candidates in relevant preclinical disease models
-Has primary, direct responsibility for evaluating the results of ongoing studies on a subset of new targets and/or therapeutic candidates, and participates in setting priorities for progressing drug targets and drug candidates
-Interacts with, and presents data to, other groups in discovery research, as well as relevant non-research groups within Regeneron, to inform them of progress with immune and inflammatory targets and candidate therapeutics.
-Provides focused and timely delivery of high quality deliverables (reports) to projects for pre and post IND activities.
-Develops and evaluates the group's members to achieve maximum productivity and achievement of goals while maintaining a collaborative team environment.
-Allocates resources needed to achieve group goals, including budgeting for operating and capital expenses and implementing state-of-the art technologies.
-Contributes to Regeneron's state-of-the-art Tier 1/2 phenotyping pipeline for target discovery across therapeutic areas
-Has close interaction with TFA heads, VPs, Program Managers and other departmental managers and functions both within and outside of Target Discovery.
-May present program updates to corporate collaborators, consultants, etc. as necessary
-Establishes and/or oversees extramural collaborations
-Writes manuscripts for publication in peer reviewed journals
-Reviews manuscripts on a regular basis
-Attends and presents results (where appropriate) at scientific meetings
-Keeps current on relevant scientific topics through literature review and attendance at scientific conferences and presentations, both internal and external to Regeneron.
-Independently leads the work to formulate, regularly update and implement the TFA's mission and strategy, as well as ensure close interaction with VP's of Target Discovery and Program direction.
-Supports and trains PhD students, post-docs and lab technicians within the department.
Experience:
Requirements:
-Doctoral degree (PhD) or equivalent;
-10+ years of experience related to immune and inflammatory areas
-A strong track record of scientific innovation
-Extensive technical and analytical experience in animal models of human immune and inflammatory diseases; experience with genetically modified mice, as well as other rodent models.
-Experience related to the discovery of the proteins that regulate immunity and inflammation, or their mechanism of action.
-Ideally have a strong general knowledge of autoimmune diseases, allergy, inflammatory conditions and treatment possiblities/challenges.
-Significant line- and project-management experince
-Experience in high level decision making as well as initiation, execution and conclusion of process
-Understanding of the drug discovery process in general with particular focus on cytokines,
their receptors and other extracellular signaling molecules involved in innate and adaptive immunity.
-Must have the demonstrated ability to manage and lead a productive team, including PhD level professionals.
