This position is responsible for the implementation, coordination and management of a program of preclinical and translational development of vaccines against tuberculosis with the focus on viral vectored and nucleic acid strategies. Close integration with the full range of Preclinical Vaccine activities will be required.



Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Manage a diverse portfolio of translational development programs based on viral vectored technology and nucleic acid delivery, which will require an excellent understanding of the underlying technology of viral vectored and nucleic acid based approaches to vaccines.
Direct experience of managing a team of extremely capable and independent scientific staff across diverse range of projects is critical.

Involvement in a range senior management committees and advisory groups will be expected, along with supporting the overall project management of the preclinical vaccine development portfolio, across all platforms and projects, in conjunction with the Senior Director and senior colleagues in the group.

Ability to communicate clearly with both specialist scientific colleagues and other stakeholders in the vaccine community is required along with a proven track record of managing external and internal collaborative projects with a range of complexities.

This will require a sound and proven scientific track record, along with demonstrable experience of project management, communication and staff management. A background in tuberculosis and an understanding of the complexities of vaccine development in this area would be considered extremely useful.

Other Responsibilities will include:

Generate lab progress reports for Annual Reports from funding agencies and presented to
Supervisor, Management, Technical Advisory Groups, Vaccine Selection Advisory Committee, and other internal steering committees

Coordinate and support project managers with pre-clinical development and relevant studies by reviewing study plans and protocols

Assist Senior Director in preparing yearly budgets based on upcoming studies program plans and reviewing budgets, as needed

Represent Aeras in external collaborations, meetings and prepare reports.


Qualifications

Ph.D. degree or equivalent, with at least 5 years scientific management of relevant projects.

Demonstrable scientific staff management experience.

Experience performing daily activities in a GLP/GCLP environment desirable.

Experienced in BSL-2/3 procedures and a broad range of biochemical, molecular biological, and microbiological knowledge and research skills.

Research experience in vaccine discovery and translational development.

Flexibility in work hours and international travel are expected.
