The EDM Engineer will be a subject-matter expert in Electric Discharge Machining (EDM) and will be responsible for optimizing Proto Labs’ EDM processes. The EDM engineer will play a key role in the Manufacturing Engineering team that works to continuously improve the speed, quality, and capabilities in Proto Labs’ manufacturing plants.
Responsibilities
Specific duties include:
· Evaluate and adjust EDM parameters to optimize machining of Aluminum and Steel with sinker electrodes.
· Specify EDM equipment, including optional features and capabilities, required to meet the needs of specific manufacturing processes.
· As the EDM subject-matter expert (SME), maintain a knowledge of new technologies and trends in the EDM industry.
· Evaluate and optimize the electrode design and machining processes.
· Train operators to setup and adjust EDM equipment.
· Work closely with internal CAM software developers to automate and optimize manufacturing processes.
· Identify opportunities, and successfully implement improvements, in EDM operations.
· Adhere to all quality and safety standards within the department and adhere to all company policies and operational procedures.
· Perform additional tasks as assigned.
Requirements
Minimum Qualifications:
· A minimum of 5 years of experience designing or optimizing sinker EDM processes in an injection mold-making environment.
· Previous experience operating sinker, wire, and hole-popper EDM machines.
· Experience designing EDM equipment preferred.
· Deep and broad knowledge of the EDM process: how it works, its applications, and its limitations.
· Ability to work independently and to provide direction and leadership to others in accomplishing department and company goals
· Excellent analytical and problem solving skills.
· Ability to set up and operate sinker EDM equipment required.
· Ability to operate wire and hole-popper EDM equipment preferred.
· Able to work in a fast-paced, team-oriented work environment.
· Good written and oral communication skills: able to communicate complex technical information to all levels of the organization.
· Successfully perform within a project framework including defined deliverables and time frames.
· Good written and oral communication skills.
Education Requirements:
Associate’s Degree in machining, machine tool technology, or similar is required.
Bachelor's degree in Industrial, Manufacturing, or Mechanical Engineering, from an accredited college or university is preferred.
