Mechanical Engineer - Machine Design / Development

Summary:
Assists in achieving Engineering objectives by designing, testing, and supporting the mechanical aspects of electro-mechanical systems; managing design / development activities; represents second level in mechanical engineering.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Support Engineering by researching, designing, developing, and testing cost effective mechanical systems, components, and attachments for computer based mail processing systems according to established policies, procedures, government regulations, and customer requirements; managing the project from start to finish; applying principles of mechanics, hydraulics, thermodynamics, heat transfer, and materials; building prototypes; working with the Machine Shop to develop test fixtures; documenting specifications and material requirements on all designs; troubleshooting problems; adhering to established project schedules and priorities; following up and supporting mechanical designs in Manufacturing and the field.


Ensure quality of mechanical designs and purchased components/systems by developing and documenting test plans; conducting, analyzing, and documenting tests; making modifications; soliciting observations from operators; requesting assistance from more experienced engineers as required; conferring with suppliers on design details, costs, and schedules of purchased products; evaluating supplier parts/systems.


Provide information by providing written status reports on progress; collecting, analyzing, and summarizing information and trends; delivering customer and internal presentations.


Maintain professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications; establishing personal networks; participating in professional societies.

Skills and Abilities:

Ability to convey technical concepts in an easily understood manner, both verbally and in writing; clear and concise verbal and written communications

Good diagnostic, organizational, and project management skills

Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw conclusions

Strong mechanical aptitude and creative ability; self-motivated; ability to work under general supervision; good technical writing skills

Requires use of 3-D solids modeling CAD systems; test equipment, such as oscilloscopes, transducers, spectrum analyzers, etc.

Desired: Unigraphics CAD experience; basic computer skills (word processing, spreadsheets, project scheduling)

Experience:
Qualifications

'4 year Technical degree or equivalent work experience of at least 6 years

'Minimum 3 years in a technical role with high speed, electro mechanical system equipment.

'Must be able to read mechanical drawings and electrical schematics.

'Machine control system literate.

'Good written and verbal communication skills. Able to work with all levels of an organization.
