Requirements:
Qualifications
15-20 years of current excess and surplus lines underwriting expertise in the area of commercial inland marine
15-20 years proven insurance business management skills and experience
Successful marketing, sales and underwriting experience in working directly with wholesale producers
Broad understanding of underwriting, claims, and actuarial functions
Demonstrated experience in hiring, training, team building, training, mentoring and performance management
Bachelor’s degree
Skills Required
Proven business skills & sound judgment (e.g. customer relationships, product portfolio management, competitive assessment and product positioning)
Expertise in writing large, complex policies
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Strong PC skills
Business strategy and planning skills
Primary Responsibilities
Lead the Inland Marine Product Line for Markel North America (wholesale and retail)
Set overall strategy for the Inland Marine Product Line and work to integrate the strategy with regional strategies in North America
Set and manage budgets/P&L for the PLL, including accounting for major deviations from budgets
Coordinate marketing activities
Effectively manage wholesale and retail relationships
Proactively identify new market opportunities and product offerings
Support cross-sell opportunities by proactively identifying client needs within the Inland Marine Product Line and passing those opportunities to other PLLs in North America
Set pricing policies and standards for products within the Inland Marine Product Line
Set and execute Inland Marine PLL specific training for underwriters and support staff
Review and approve large submissions beyond current authority levels
Develop Inland Marine Product Line specific underwriting policies and procedures and make changes where appropriate
Recommend cross-product line underwriting policy changes to the Chief Underwriting Officer where appropriate
Ensure the underwriting policies within the Inland Marine Product Line are aligned with broad Markel underwriting policies
Manage dotted line reporting of Inland Marine Product Line regional underwriters
Conduct career planning, coaching, training and performance feedback for regional underwriters
Discuss concerns/feedback with Regional Presidents and Chief Underwriting Officer regarding systems implementation as well as regional underwriter performance. |
