The Laser Systems Engineering Manager is responsible for managing staff, planning group tasks, and performing day to day activities associated with New Product Introduction (NPI) and Product Life Cycle (PLC) for the next generation of femtosecond pulse laser systems. The Laser Systems Engineering Manager is both an administrative manager and an individual technical contributor. This position reports to the Vice President of Engineering.


Essential Responsibilities: The Laser Systems Engineering Manager is responsible for technical leadership and administrative management of the Systems Engineering Group. The Systems Engineering group uses an interdisciplinary approach to enable the realization of successful systems. It focuses on defining required functionality early in the development cycle, documenting requirements, then proceeding with design synthesis and system validation.

This group is a key contributor to the laser NPI process and the Product Life Cycle, working closely with our Product Marketing/PLM and Operations/Manufacturing Engineering teams. The Systems Engineering Group works closely with the balance of the R&D team to ensure all elements of the system are designed to achieve the product roadmap.

The Laser Systems Engineering Manager also works with all members of the R&D team to facilitate system testing, and manages lab assets & infrastructure.

Responsibilities include:
•Manage the Laser Systems Engineering Group oCreate and manage plans associated with staffing, projects, and budgets to meet organization goals
oEnsure Group objectives and deliverables are fulfilled
oReport project status, outcomes and recommendations to improve products and company business processes
oPerform administrative tasks associated with payroll and performance assessment of group staff •Collaborate with Marketing/PLM and Operations to define product roadmaps, product specifications, system concepts and requirements
•Define system test environments and plans for new feature development and regression testing of laser systems, providing direction and guidance to other members of the R&D team which may include test staff in the future
•Work directly with company IP committee to evaluate inventions and successfully prosecute patent applications
•Collaborate with senior company managers to formulate R&D strategy and topics for internally and externally funded projects
•Interface with electrical, mechanical, laser, software, and application engineers to solve interdisciplinary problems
•Specify design requirements, detail and test plans for free space and fiber optic components and subsystems for pulse amplification, compression, and beam delivery
•Design and review of geometrical optics layout and Gaussian beam propagation analysis.
•Work with operations to manage sustaining engineering issues to closure
•Documentation of optical design, modeling, and component specification.

Qualifications:
•Masters degree in Engineering and 10+ years of technical experience in a combination of roles including individual contributor and technical management.
•The candidate should have extensive prior experience in some of the following: systems engineering, opto-mechanical system design, electrical & software system design, and system test.
•Experience required in all aspects of product life cycle from the exploratory stage through volume production.
•Demonstrated ability to manage a technical project from concept through manufacturing release. Duties include influencing and coordinating the work of other engineers, technologists, and technicians to deliver reliably functioning solutions in a cost effective and timely manner. •Must have prior experience managing groups of 5 or more staff members including responsibility for performance management and mentoring.
•The candidate must have a collaborative approach to leadership and be adept at working with senior and junior engineers.

Physical and Environmental Conditions:
•Duties may involve working with laser light, optical fiber and other potentially hazardous materials.
•Employees must wear protective goggles, or glasses when in the proximity of an energized laser.
•Employee must wear masks as defined by the specific rules within the work area.
•Ability to operate equipment as defined by job
•Lifting, bending, and other physical requirements typical of experimental work in an optics laboratory environment will be required (under 50 pounds).
