ArcelorMittal Cleveland has an immediate opening for a Manager – Operations Technology – Hot Roll-Finishing in our Operations Technology Division in Cleveland, Ohio. The following primary position responsibilities and key position requirements are intended to provide an overview of the position, but are not all-inclusive.



Job Description:

The Manager Hot Rolled and Finishing - Operations Technology is responsible for the management of the Engineers in Operations Technology supporting these units who together will provide successful implementation of process improvements in the making of steel and other initiatives which directly result in a safer work environment, improved productivity, enhanced quality, and reduced costs.


This is a hands-on, in the shop type of position, an analytical type of position requiring a comprehensive knowledge of a Steel Plant Industrial Operating Facility, and a comfort for the shop floor environment, as well as Managerial and Administrative responsibilities.


The area of influence and control of a Manager Hot Roll and Finishing - Operations Technology could be anywhere in the Cleveland Facility, managing multiple production processes. To illustrate: It will include the Hot Rolling Process (from the Slab Yard, Reheat Furnaces, Roughing Operation, Rolling Operations, Down coilers and Shipping Operations.) Included within this process, but not limited to it, is the preparation of the incoming slabs, the feeding of the reheat furnaces, basic heat transfer laws, the reheat furnace operation, Rolling technology of the Roughing Process and Rolling process and it’s associated maintenance, heat transfer of the rolling process, gauge control, width control, Down coiling operation, technology and process, Quality systems of descaling and surface inspection, Roll Shop operation, manufacturing, applied effects, material selection, degradation, etc.) It will also include the Cold Rolled and Finishing Process (from the Pickling Operation, Cold Roll Tandem Operation, Batch Anneal, Tempering and Shipping.) It will also include the Coating Operations of the Hot Dip Galvanize Line from Coil entry to shipping. Included within this process, but not limited to it, is the Pickling technology and process, Tandem mill technology and process, HDGL technology and process from entry section, payoff reel process, thickness gauge, drum shear, welding process, Cleaning section, tension leveling, looping process, furnace section, pre-heating, heating, soaking and cooling process, Pot operation and coating section and tower, air knife operation, skin pass and delivery section, surface inspection and down coiling and packaging, etc.).


The Manager - Operations Technology will report directly to the Division Manager – Operations Technology, while maintaining a close relationship and functionally reporting to the Division Managers of the Division he/she is representing. The individual will work primarily with the Engineers – Operations Technology and Departmental supervision to implement and evaluate operating strategies. They will also look at the execution of operating practices and evaluate their impact on the process. The Operations Technology Manager requires a high level of initiative, curiosity, and persistence for the successful fulfillment of these tasks. This position also requires a willingness to work on the floor in an Industrial Steel Plant environment.

Some of the main duties and responsibilities include:

1) Review of all current standard operating procedures in each area of the process. Compare each procedure to ""Best in Class"" worldwide. Facilitate changes to those standard operating procedures. Conduct training to ensure understanding and successful implementation of the enhanced procedures.

2) Perform benchmarking with other AM facilities as well as with facilities of our competitors to understand what targets and goals are attainable.

3) Develop and conduct basic Training classes for the hourly and salaried workforce, when required for developing the necessary skills to execute the actions required for implementation.

4) Work on multiple continuous improvements to the steelmaking process for overall process improvement.

5) Lead and/or participate in the implementation of daily management KPI's and assist in achieving those targets.

6) Participate in the implementation of equipment upgrades, refractory upgrades and material selections.

7) Prepare reports and accumulate and analyze data to support the assigned projects.

8) Manage the administration needs of the Engineers.

9) Lead and mentor Associates and Engineers

10) The manager must act as a liaison between multiple departments. He/She must coordinate between R&D, Operations, Maintenance, Quality, CTO, Finance, Commercial, Engineering, etc., at the Plant level as well as the Global Corporate level

11) The Manager must communicate with all levels of employees (hourly, salary), and at all levels of management from the CEO to the Plant Manager, Division Managers, etc.

12) Develop Progress Reports for Corporate distribution of Project Status on a Monthly basis.


Note: Some shift work and/or weekend work may be required.


Experience Requirements:


Minimum/Basic Requirements:

5 years experience in any operating, maintenance and/or technical support division/department in an integrated steel mill including Ironmaking, Steelmaking, Hot Rolling, Cold Rolling, Finishing processes, MEU, Quality etc.

Proven ability to access, record, and analyze information on a computer.

Good written and oral communication skills.



Preferred Requirements:

15 years experience in any operating, maintenance and/or technical support division/department in an integrated steel mill including Ironmaking, Steelmaking, Hot Rolling, Cold Rolling, Finishing processes, MEU, Quality etc.

Proven ability to access, record, and analyze information on a computer.

Good written and oral communication skills.



Education Requirements:


Minimum/Basic Requirements:

BS Degree – Technical or 5 years equivalent related experience


Preferred Requirements:

BS Degree – Engineering or 15 years equivalent related experience
