Job Summary

We are seeking a Managing Attorney for the Zurich Staff counsel office in Southfield, MI. Our attorneys handle a wide variety of commercial general liability and workers’ compensation, as well as some professional liability, construction site occurrences and construction defect cases.
The candidate will manage and lead trial attorneys and professionals in the office responsible for representing the commercial insureds of a prestigious and financially secure commercial insurance carrier. Our workers’ compensation and general liability cases present a challenging and varied caseload with regard to type and complexity. The managing attorney will also carry a caseload reduced proportionately to the size of the office.

This is a key leadership position for someone to be responsible for driving improved total loss outcomes in the office and the State of Michigan. Candidates must demonstrate the following skills: talent management and team development; recruiting and retaining highly skilled and customer focused professionals; commitment to excellence and customer service; the ability to present well to and deliver excellent results for clients, customers and all stakeholders; and successful trial track record.

Duties also include driving continuous improvement in all aspects of implementing case management and customer service skills, including accurate analysis and evaluation of the litigation file, proactive and focused discovery and investigation skills, effective selection and use of experts, thorough witness/client preparation, effective motion practice, trial preparation and courtroom skills, compliance with files handling guidelines, and focused file expenses. Utilizes case trial settlement skills including evaluation and facilitation of negotiation techniques, evaluation of courtroom ability and monitoring and reporting of high exposure cases.

Job Qualifications

Requirements:

• Valid Michigan State Bar License

• Eight years of courtroom experience (including three years of insurance defense litigation) and three years of office management experience

• Able to demonstrate history of strong leadership abilities, experience with quality
assurance or quality control systems to manage litigated cases, and PC software

• Working knowledge of insurance company best practices and technologically apt

• Physical job location in Southfield, MI
