We are currently seeking a Manufacturing Engineer to join our Manufacturing Engineering team. The Manufacturing Engineer will be responsible for the design, selection, specification, and optimization of the required equipment, tooling, processes, and operations; and the determination of other technical matters required to make a given product according to the desired volume, timetable, cost, quality level, and other specifications.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Design fixtures to hold forgings for machining
Develop and modify manufacturing processes including process planning, fixtures, cutting tools, gages, programs, special processes, assembly, and inspection
Select correct tooling for processes. Lead or assist in the design of new or revised tooling to be used in all phases of the manufacturing process, including forging, machining, welding, heat treating, cleaning and assembly.
Update and maintain routings, work instructions, control plans, PFMEAs, solid models and drawings
Analyze, document, investigate and implement corrections for process failures; and initiate and implement cost reductions.
Participate in cross-functional team environment – supporting plant manufacturing operations including implementation of lean methods within the business.
Reduce scrap and non-conformances through training and improved process control. Perform root cause analysis using the Eight Disciplines (8D) process and various statistical analysis methods.
Bring new ideas and positive support to the current process
Provide leadership and work with other functions to help the plant meet goals in safety, quality, ISO, schedule performance, inventory, scrap reduction and cost, and participate in a team environment. Other duties may include the need to establish economical manufacturing routings for a wide range of materials including castings and weldments. Perform production time studies as necessary.
Develop and implement capital projects to improve material flow, reduce floor space requirements, and reduce costs. Assist in the development of justification for new capital equipment and manage the installation and startup of the new equipment. Lead or assist in continuous improvement activities.
Provide production support in areas of safety, quality, through improvement, line balancing, tooling engineering, inventory management, and cost optimization.
Education and Experience
Engineering degree
Minimum of 5 years of experience in an Industrial/Manufacturing Engineering role
Tooling Engineering and Fixture Design
Strong SolidWorks experience
Experience and knowledge of manufacturing processes, automated and manual machinery and cutting tools
Must have experience and knowledge of GD&T and inspection tools and methods
Must be able to work in a fast-paced environment with short deadlines
Excellent Project Management Skills
Knowledge of quality management systems
Ability to perform root cause and permanent corrective action
Strong interpersonal and leadership skills
Strong oral and written communication skills
Strong project and team leadership
Strong documentation skills
Strong computer skills (word processing, spreadsheets, CAD, project management)
Experience with the following: conducting time studies, plant layouts, work instructions, kaizen events, and other classical IE tools.
Experience with Lean, Six Sigma a plus
Journeyman tool maker skills a plus
Language & Communication Skills
Ability to read and interpret documents such as patents, safety instructions, operating and maintenance manuals, and procedures. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before customers and fellow employees.
Mathematical Skills
Ability to apply concepts in algebra, geometry, trigonometry, physics, hydraulics, pneumatics, electricity, and electronics.
Reasoning Ability
Ability to apply principles of logical and scientific thinking to a wide range of problems. Must have overall excellent problem solving skills. Must be able to balance variables such as quality, cost, safety and ease of manufacturing when solving problems.
Other Requirements
Knowledge of CAD systems (2D and 3D) and basic manufacturing techniques.
Equipment Used
Personal computer, measuring tools, miscellaneous hand tools, gauges, miscellaneous computer software programs, test equipment, lathe, drill press, welder, bandsaw, cutting torches, copying machines, fax machine and telephone.
Physical Demands/Work Environment
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this position.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and listen. The employee must be able to walk to all areas of the plant at any time. The employee is required to stand, stoop, and kneel to analyze problems with machinery and equipment.
The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 15 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 60 pounds. Specific vision ability required by this job includes close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to focus.
The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.
Office area is climate controlled. When in the plant, the worker is exposed to the hazard of mobile equipment moving in close areas. High noise levels are present and the temperature in the plant is seasonal.
