Job Description:
POSITION SUMMARY
Incumbent is responsible for developing operating plans, strategy, and overall vision for the Manufacturing Engineering function. The incumbent has the authority and is responsible to carry out day-to-day and long term operation of all elements of the Manufacturing Engineering function. Position involves a high degree of interface with Operations, Industrial Design, Development Engineering, and Quality Control. The incumbent will also be communicating plans, projects, and capabilities to Senior Management.

SCOPE OF POSITION
Incumbent reports directly to the Plant Director. Position manages the Manufacturing Engineers and tasks range from simple to complex. Organization, follow through, and communication skills are important factors in daily administration of this position. The incumbent will use overall knowledge of Precor's mission and strategies, the mission and strategies of Manufacturing Engineering, and sound technical judgment to ensure the Manufacturing Engineering organization satisfactorily fulfills its stated objectives.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Quality
1. Develops reliable designs of tooling, jigs and fixtures, and other specialized production equipment.
2. Supports the Quality Control and Purchasing Departments, as necessary, in our overall efforts to improve product quality and achieve continuous improvement.
3. Supports on-going company Total Quality objectives. Develops and encourages staff in knowledge and use of Total Quality principles.

Support of Manufacturing Departments: The primary purpose of the Manufacturing Engineering Department is the support of Production Departments through:
1. Providing on-going advice, direction and assistance in specialized equipment, line layouts, production process specifications, machine capabilities, etc.
2. Determining capital equipment needs and training necessary for Manufacturing personnel to operate complex processes.
3. Determining all Plant Engineering requirements needed to support the Manufacturing effort.
4. Assisting as required, the smooth transition of new products into the production cycle.

New Product Development / Sustaining Engineering
1. Assists the Development Engineering Department in the documentation and design of new products.
2. Directs and coordinates the design and development of all tooling, and jigs and fixtures necessary for new products.
3. Coordinates and/or directs all activities toward design corrections and/or fixes to existing products, for enhancing or amending previous designs.

Communication and Leadership
1. Effectively communicates to co-workers, suppliers, et al.; information, which they require to do their jobs. The communication must be clear, and accomplished in a positive manner.
2. Provides positive leadership and direction needed to accomplish the overall objectives of the position.

Facilities Department
1. Provides technical support to the Manufacturing group, including plant and equipment maintenance.
2. Directs the Maintenance group in all aspects of Plant Engineering; including power, lighting, air, layout, code compliance, etc.

Personnel Development
1. Identifies critical skills and abilities required for positions within the function and assures that these skills are present.
2. Develops and revises job descriptions for all positions within the department, consistent with needs.
3. Provides prompt and objective performance feedback to all employees within the department.
4. Deals with performance problems quickly, objectively, and with consideration for the individual.

Other
1. Maintains all budgets within spending limits.
2. Participates as a key member of Precor's Safety Committee.
3. Actively supports the Precor Education Program (PEP) by instructing classes.
4. Participates in developing long range Operations Objectives as a key member of the Plant Director's staff.
5. Project manage and oversight of manufacturing improvement projects.
6. Six Sigma and/or Lean Certifications a plus

Experience and Skills:
EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS
Bachelors Degree in Manufacturing Engineering; Production; Industrial, Mechanical, or Electrical Engineering.

PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE
1. Minimum of two years leading a Manufacturing Engineering Team or other management experience, and a minimum of seven years of engineering experience in a manufacturing engineering area.
2. Experience in leading edge manufacturing systems and techniques is desirable.
3. Experience in assembly procedures, process flow, and process controls.
4. Ability to use the Industry standard CAD systems for design and documentation.
5. Ability to help subordinates identify, quantify, and resolve problems.
6. Ability to handle simultaneous tasks in an environment which can be stressful at times.
7. Ability to use standard PC software applications including Excel and Word.
8. Knowledge of plant engineering and code compliance standards, i.e.; OSHA, WISHA, etc.
9. Project leadership experience is necessary.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT
Works in normal office conditions. Will be traveling between Precor plants. Will also occasionally work in the assembly process and mechanical model shop areas. Occasional external customer interface and travel required.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Light physical effort in an office environment. Occasional lifting up to 40 pounds.
