Mechanical Engineer

Job Description
Schafer’s Livermore has an opening for a Mechanical Engineer to work within tolerances ranging from one (1) micrometer to 25 nm and with knowledge of fabrication, manufacturing, materials and dimensional metrology to achieve these tolerances. This position will support the Department of Energy’s Inertial Confinement Fusion Program (ICF) and High Energy Density Science (HEDS) projects. The selected candidate will work closely with scientists in a dynamic research environment to develop and define specifications and drawings that meet campaign requirements, as well as with advanced machinists and technicians who are responsible for the operation of ultra-precise CNC fabrication equipment. This position will support manufacturing, research and development in achieving productivity, quality and cost objectives in the manufacturing of precision components and assemblies.

The selected candidate will:

Work with technical staff to schedule projects and allocate staff resources efficiently across the organization;
Lead projects from concept to delivery within project schedules and budgets;
Self-initiate corrective actions for quality concerns based on effective problem solving skills and be able to develop temporary and permanent solutions to manufacturing issues;
Learn and operate new and existing metrology equipment at an expert level to qualify components and train other staff in the operation of said equipment;
Generate and organize QC reports and manage supplier procurements;
Ensure equipment is optimized and calibrated;
Recommend capital investments to management to increase efficiency, streamline production, or other cost saving/quality improvement measures;
Act as a scientific/technical leader on projects.
Projects involve requirements for precision or accuracy that are beyond commercially available capabilities, and often include advanced development in both fabrication and metrology. The selected candidate must be forward thinking in identifying long-term technology development to meet future program needs.

Responsibilities:

Work with internal and external engineers/scientists to generate specifications and drawings for fabrication.
Formulate project and manufacturing plans.
Perform engineering calculations to support the design, fabrication, or metrology operations.
Formulate approaches for measuring shape and finish errors on components.
Analyze and interpret metrology.
Responsible for fabrication of centimeter-sized components
Collaborate with National Laboratory scientists and engineers.
Participate as a team member composed of other engineers, advanced machinists and technicians to fabricate and measure parts.
Prepare and present conference papers and perform other documentation as appropriate.
Provide guidance and act as scientific/technical leader on the projects.
Determine functional requirements for new or modified specialized hardware equipment and support systems.
Participate in or lead formal and informal Engineering design reviews
May supervise advanced technicians and machinists.

Qualifications:

MS in Mechanical Engineering or related field or equivalent.
Strong 3D modeling and technical drawing skills in an advanced 3D design software (PTC Creo or Solidworks preferred) and familiarity with ASME Y14.5M drawing standards.
Comprehensive knowledge in fabrication, manufacturing, machine tools, and coordinate measuring machines.
Proven track record of team-based project management and delivering on time and within budget.
Experience with optical metrology and diagnostic techniques for quality and production control.
Experience in generating specifications and tolerances for customer work pieces.
Experience in writing inspection reports on manufactured components.
Familiarity with computer-controlled machine tools.
Ability to determine limitations in resolution and accuracy in manufacturing.
Ability to interface with machinists and technicians
Proficient verbal and written communication skills necessary to effectively collaborate in a team environment and present and explain technical information
U.S. Citizenship and qualification for a DOE security clearance required.
