The Metallurgy Lab Manager is responsible for planning, coordinating, and executing metallurgical testing; utilizing manpower, methods, materials and machinery to ensure the Metallurgy Lab team delivers excellent service to all Lab customers throughout the Blount enterprise. This position is also a recognized expert in materials science, metallurgical testing techniques, and the heat treatment of steels

RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE, BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:

Provide department direction and leadership in order to in order to promote continuous improvement in laboratory operations; develop and foster an environment of team work

Develop and implement policies, operational standards, and quality systems for Metallurgy

Manage the Lab’s work flow, understanding and coordinating available resources.

Plan, coordinate, and conduct research, development, or engineering projects assigned directly or to department subordinates

Create an atmosphere in which timely and high quality information flows smoothly between oneself and others; encourage the open expression of ideas and opinions
Provide support for miscellaneous product and process problems related to specification, failure analysis, production down time, or quality deviations in order to expedite production to schedule, assure product quality, and to support customer/user needs.
Assure compliance of laboratory facilities with HAZMAT, NPDES & Radiation Protection standards

Coordinate and conduct department audits such as 6S, calibration records, and quality systems

Assist in developing the annual capital plan for the Metallurgy Lab and ensure the department works within budget

EDUCATION:

Bachelor of Science degree in an engineering discipline from an accredited program, with emphasis in material science or metallurgical engineering or equivalent, required; Master’s degree desirable

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

Minimum ten years of relevant experience in engineering, including a strong and broad understanding of raw material manufacturing, raw material specifications and application, and manufacturing technology, particularly related to heat treat, chemistry, surface finishing, and test and measurement technology related to metallurgy and product test

Minimum three years of technical management experience to include budget planning and maintenance, and management of staff

Expert in selection and heat treatment of HSLA and Tool Steels

Experience with products and applications, especially in the outdoor power tool, lawn & garden market is desired

In-depth understanding and application of TQC principles, tools and techniques, ISO 9000 quality standards

Demonstrated skills in continuous learning, flexibility, customer focus, quality commitment and good relationships are required

Excellent interpersonal and communication skills; written, verbal, and listening, with exceptional customer service orientation

Proven ability to take ownership, a readiness and a willingness to implement new ideas and concepts, and effectively manage projects

Ability to maintain confidentiality with sensitive customer and internal information

Excellent computer aptitude and skills in Microsoft Office Suite

Available to work on site as required by job and travel as needed
