CTLGroup is looking for a highly qualified individual to fill an expert consulting role at a prominent nationally and internationally recognized testing laboratory that specializes in transportation (including rail and bridge) and mechanical and structural component testing and consulting projects. This individual must have developed a recognized expertise from the engineering, scientific or technical community at large and a proven ability to generate consulting and forensic business. As such, this individual must establish and maintain an expert metallurgical, engineering mechanics, or mechanical engineering consulting practice that utilizes the capabilities of the testing laboratory to deliver high quality, expert consulting services to the firm’s clients. The volume of work generated must sustain the targeted productivity of at least four Laboratory, Consulting and Technical staff.
With extensive technical expertise and a high level of experience and professional judgment, this individual will apply advanced technologies, as well as develop and implement new and improved concepts and approaches, to solve problems for the firm’s clients. This individual will direct and complete unique and complex projects with full technical and project management responsibility. As such, this individual will make project related decisions and recommendations that are recognized as authoritative and having a direct impact on project quality, schedule, profitability and success.
This individual will collaborate and work closely with the Materials Testing Laboratory, the Materials Consulting Group, the Structural Engineering & Mechanics Group and other CTLGroup internal operating groups to develop specialty testing, applied research and expert consulting projects. Furthermore, this individual will collaborate and work closely with the firm’s client-focused marketing groups including the Transportation Practice Group, the Materials and Products Practice Group and the Litigation and Insurance Practice Group.
Major responsibilities include:
Support and implement the strategic initiatives for the Structural & Transportation
Laboratory
Proactively maintain a strategic focus within the individual’s area of expertise and understand trends, opportunities, threats, strengths and weaknesses within the industry in order to identify and give input on strategic planning
Focus on innovation and emerging technologies to create new business opportunities for the company and the firm’s clients
Command respect by displaying a professional image and demeanor. Project confidence and represent the firm in a positive way
Proactively identify areas of learning and participate in professional development activities in order to maintain and enhance work knowledge and skills
Participate in root cause analyses and investigations of mechanical and structural component failures
As a project manager:
Direct projects keeping appropriate parties informed of progress
Schedule, coordinate and delegate project work
Ensure that needed materials and/or outside service vendors are available
Ensure that the project is conducted in a timely fashion and that the firm’s QMS standards are met or exceeded to the client’s satisfaction
Foresee and respond in a timely manner when confronted with project-related issues
Manage client’s expectations and facilitate any changes in the client’s needs or project objectives
Be willing to work overtime to meet project deadlines and the client’s expectations
Up to 25% travel may be required for this position due to field work, client meetings and active participation at conferences and seminars.

Required Skills
Education and experience:
Master's Degree required, Ph.D. preferred in Metallurgical Engineering, Materials Science, Engineering Mechanics or Mechanical Engineering. Experience and expertise in at least one or more of the following is desirable:
Welding technology, evaluation and failure analysis
Forensic metal fatigue and fracture analysis
Forensic analysis of mechanical and structural component failures
Corrosion investigations and remaining services life assessments
Metallurgical investigations
Advanced solid mechanics
A minimum of 10 years of experience is required in a mechanical and structural laboratory environment. Experience with structural lab test processes and procedures, determination of root causation, problem resolution and litigation is desirable. Excellent project management, leadership skills, technical writing and presentation skills are required. |
