RTI International's Center for Energy Technology(CET) is currently seeking an experienced Process Engineer. The successful candidate will be responsible for conceptual design, modeling/simulation, optimization, scale up, and perform economic evaluations of novel process technologies to produce clean energy, fuels, and feedstocks for the chemical, refining, transportation, and power generation industries. A key feature of these design activities will be optimizing integration of these novel technologies into large industrial processing systems. These novel technologies will primarily be focused in the areas of gas cleaning (e.g., desulfurization), hydrogen production, biofuels, carbon dioxide separation and capture and utilization, membrane separations, natural gas processing, and syngas conversion processes (e.g., Fischer Tropsch synthesis and alcohol production).
This candidate will be expected to work effectively with research chemists and chemical engineers involved in the technology development and business managers responsible for commercialization of the technology. Additional responsibilities will be to support the design, construction supervision, commissioning and operation of laboratory systems to pilot plant demonstration systems.
The successful candidate will also be expected to effectively interact with external collaborators and customers at both technical and business levels and actively participate in the preparation of research proposals for the government and commercial funding opportunities. This individual must also be able to work efficiently independently with minimum supervision and supervise and motivate junior staff.
Minimum Qualifications:
• B.S. in Chemical Engineering,
• 10 years of related process engineering experience.
• Strong knowledge of fundamental chemical engineering principles, process design and equipment specification, and process economics.
• Creative problem solving abilities.
• Proficiency with software for process modeling/simulation (AspenPlus, HYSYS), process costing (ICARIS).
• Demonstrated oral and written communication skills.
• Some travel (~10- 20%) to customer and field locations may be required.***
Desired Skills:
• Ph.D.
• R&D experience in carbon capture and syngas processing.
• Experience with Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) modeling
• Ability to run Thermoflow, Reliasoft, and ProMax
