Job Description
The Process Engineer is responsible for day-to-day and forward process engineering involving new process development, product technologies, yield improvement and technical support to GMI operations, customers, and Plant Engineering. Additionally, the Process Engineer will ensure compliance to company standards, establish plant guidelines for improving process capabilities, metallurgical specifications, evaluate the quality and properties of materials, and analyze process and material failures. Major challenges of this position include establishing priorities and work flow to meet customer expectations on a timely basis through initiating/developing/implementing cost reduction and continuous improvement projects.
Key Responsibilities
Evaluate materials and develop processes to manufacture materials for use in products that must meet specialized design and performance specifications
Provide timely and accurate material and metallurgical related responses to internal customers.
Provide technical support that address process and material concerns in product developments.
Directs analysis and evaluation of the quality and properties of metals
Research and develop new methodologies, propose new research concepts, carry out the research and document the results.
Actively participate in cost reduction programs by proposing new cost reduction ideas.
Evaluate and recommend actions leading to cost reduction efforts.
Develop and implement cost reduction ideas.
Evaluate new and existing inspection methods and processes to determine validity and to recommend changes.
Provide technical support to the organization and make recommendations to enhance effectiveness of productivity, quality and safety.
Maintain effective systems for employee communications, continuous improvement, employee training and development.
Provide coaching, and individual team development for all Process optimization teams
Develop and determine feasibility, and techniques for producing new products.
Required Skills
Position requires thorough knowledge of steel manufacturing or industrial process design and engineering techniques.
Working knowledge of Continuous improvement tools.
Experience with Metallurgical lab equipment.
Strong understanding of all phases of project management, including initiating, planning, executing, controlling, and closing.
Excellent personal time management skills, with ability to manage multiple priorities with possible conflicting deadlines.
Must have working knowledge of Statistical Process Control.
Knowledge of manufacturing techniques and operations.
Must have good analytical skills.
Proficiency with Microsoft software applications.
Must be proficient in the use of analytical tools and techniques to analyze data, train others and participate in teams to find solutions to problems.
Required Experience
BS degree in Metallurgy, Materials Science, or Chemical Engineering.
5 or more years related experience in a manufacturing environment.
Experience working with industry standards such as ASME, ASM, ISO, etc.
Experience with Metallurgical lab equipment.
Experience with electric arc furnaces, AOD, and/or induction furnaces.
