Technical/Professional Knowledge and Skills:

· Thorough knowledge of Meritor product lines and manufacturing processes.

· Ability to resolve metallurgical issues independently

· Ability to coach others

· Conduct Audit Surveys and otherwise work with suppliers to improve product and
service.

· Perform materials characterization for the purpose of failure resolution and product improvement.

· Consistently drives for improvements by demonstrating the ability to use all resources to eliminate roadblocks to product improvements/changes.

· Provide materials engineering support to the design, manufacturing, and procurement staffs

· Maintain Material & Process Specifications

· Expand expertise in Materials Engineering and Manufacturing Operations.

· Build links to customers – Establish good working relationships with customers.

Education/Certifications:

B.S. in Metallurgy and/or Materials Science and Engineering is required.

M.S. in Metallurgy and/or Materials Science and Engineering is preferred.

Required Qualifications:

Minimum of 5 years of relevant metallurgical experience in manufacturing, product design and/or fracture analysis.

Thorough understanding of ferrous metallurgy

Overview:

Optimize the materials and processes used in the manufacture of Meritor components. Manage the Metallurgical and Gear Machining Quality functions at the Fletcher operation.

Core Responsibilities:

Conducts microscopic, macroscopic, and other tests and investigations on samples of metals and alloys for purposes as metallurgical control over products or use in developing new or improved grades and types of metals, alloys, or production methods.

Supervise laboratory and machining Quality personnel.

Manage MET Laboratory.

Interprets findings and prepares drawings, charts, and graphs for inclusion in reports for
reference or instruction purposes, and writes reports regarding findings, conclusions, and recommendations.

Coordinates and participates in performing special tests, such as end-quench hardenability, bend and tensile, and grain size tests. Examination of material through qualitative and quantitative analysis to ensure compliance with established standards, hardenability and tensile tests.

Is responsible for evaluating incoming material by qualitative and quantitative analysis to ensure compliance to Meritor specifications. The metallurgist’s responsibility includes testing and monitoring cutting oils, coolants, cleaners, and rust preventatives.

Is responsible for the establishing and monitoring carburizing, heat treating, and drawing processes parameters.

Acts in an advisory capacity to the various manufacturing and service departments, as required for welding, casting, coating, and painting.

Leads formal problem solving activities (8Ds) for the Gearing Department for customer complaints.

Maintain departmental procedures.

Additional Responsibilities:

Studies photomicrographs and performs microscopic examinations on samples to determine metal characteristics such as crystal structure, porosity, and homogeneity.
Meets as needed with manufacturing and inspection personnel to resolve manufacturing and size change problems that are material process related.
