Advanced Liquid Logic was founded in 2004 by Dr. Michael Pollack and Dr. Vamsee Pamula as a technology spinout from Duke University’s Pratt School of
Engineering, following several years of technology development within Duke’s electrical engineering labs. In 2005 the Company hired CEO, Rich West and key
scientists.The Company has developed significantly since then by licensing the core patents from Duke University, winning grants, initiating academic and commercial collaborations, securing financing, filing additional patent applications and building an excellent team.
The Company is currently developing several products for use in a number of markets such as clinical diagnostic laboratories, field-based molecular testing and
life science research. The Company’s core missions are to provide cost-effective automation solutions to complex molecular assay workflows and to improve the accessibility of state-of-the-art testing outside of centralized laboratory facilities.

Job Description

Position Summary

The Product Development Manager will be responsible for the planning, execution, and advancement of the newborn screening project to final stages of product development. Additionally, this person will be responsible for accomplishing the stated project objectives including creating clear and attainable project objectives, building the project requirements, and managing the project scope. This person is also accountable for meeting budget goals within project timing for new product launches and upgrades. The product manager will coordinate with R&D, biochemistry, cartridge development and manufacturing to assure timely delivery of the products.

Specific Responsibilities

Serve as point-of-contact with the customer to understand and implement requirements

Write, edit and maintain documentation describing product requirements, detailed specifications and execution plans/outcomes

Work with other functional groups within a matrix organization to translate product concepts into technical requirements, physical specifications and execution plans

Track progress of product development programs within the phase gate process, estimating time-lines for the performance of various tasks

Ensure product development process is adherent to quality systems regulations

Work with functional groups to identify and document risk areas and risk mitigation plans

Provide senior management with regular project performance status, variances to plan and identification of corrective actions

Work with marketing team throughout product development process to ensure final product is in line with marketing requirements

Communicate with manufacturing teams on product development process to ensure final product is manufacturable, and consistent with targeted bill of materials

Track financial expenditures (labor, non-labor and others) and compare to product program budget forecast

Identify required changes to product budget forecast, based on new or unforeseen resource requirements

Establish and support an environment of continuous improvement

Provide development to scientists and engineers as appropriate, including: coaching, training and evaluation

Analyze technical and clinical literature and extract useful concepts for implementation

Qualifications

Passionate about the project-specific mission of developing products to improve newborn lives through screening

Proven project management skills with the skills to deliver on project goals on time and within budget in a fast paced environment

Demonstrated expertise in life sciences or diagnostics product development encompassing multiple disciplines

Aptitude to quickly gain expertise in new subject areas

Intellectual capacity to lead a talented group of engineers and scientists

Excellent written and oral communication skills and ability to clearly explain complex issues and report progress to a variety of audiences across functions and levels

Strong business acumen with a customer centric perspective

Demonstrated ability to effectively lead and work with cross-functional teams

Ability to work in a biosafety level 2 environment

Competent working knowledge of development and quality system processes for electronic design, software, and reagent production

Knowledge of Six Sigma/Process Excellence Tools and Product Lifecycle Management

Education / Experience Level

Advanced degree (MS or PhD) in Engineering or the biological sciences
7 – 10 years of product development project management experience in diagnostics or life sciences industry setting, working with budgets and product documentation (preferably in an FDA-regulated setting)
Experience in new product development, preferably with microfluidics or microsystem technologies
Working knowledge of high throughput diagnostics or screening laboratory settings, preferably of newborn screening technology and markets
PMP certification preferred
