Intellectual Ventures (""IV"") is a privately-held, invention investment company based in Bellevue, Washington. Intellectual Ventures is the leader in the business of invention. Driven by the belief that invention sparks progress, Intellectual Ventures is committed to creating and sustaining a market for invention and being the leading invention partner for the world's most innovative companies and individuals. The company creates new inventions, invests in existing inventions and partners with individuals, universities and research labs worldwide to develop inventions. Intellectual Ventures provides companies access to these inventions through a variety of licensing and partnering programs.
The Invention Science Fund (ISF) is funded to prepare, prosecute, and license patents from our in-house inventing. They accomplish this by strategically researching the needs in many areas to develop and expand our patent portfolio. ISF is comprised of patent prosecutors, paralegals, program managers, inventors, and a growing business development group.
The Invention Science Fund (ISF) within Intellectual Ventures, is hiring a RF Engineer to support an incubated technology development effort.
ISF’s Metamaterials Commercialization Center (MCC) accelerates innovation through commercializing its metamaterials inventions. Metamaterials are synthetic materials engineered to have electromagnetic properties not found in nature, and can be used to design unprecedented devices. To-date, MCC has successfully incubated and launched 2 spin-out companies using its metamaterials technology. IV has demonstrated that metamaterials can be used to create a new class of electrically reconfigurable antennas, and MCC now seeks to demonstrate the disruptive potential of metamaterials in terrestrial communication market spaces. The successful candidate will perform Research and Development work within Intellectual Ventures Lab helping to invent, design, build, and test the next generation of smart-antennas, as well as participate as an inventor and author on patents. The position requires a candidate with a strong technical background that works well in fast-paced small-teams and energetic atmosphere typical of start-up environments.
Required skills / experience:
•Solid background in electromagnetics and antenna theory
•Experience using full-wave solvers (COMSOL, CST Microwave Studio, Ansys HFSS), semi-analytical approaches, and numerical models to design RF components - especially antennas, waveguides, mode-transitions, and passive-components
•Experience conducting experiments in a laboratory setting and familiarity with RF test equipment such as network analyzers
•Experience in antenna testing and characterization
•Experience in design and fabrication of antenna structures realized on printed circuit board, such as patch antennas, PIFA, MLA, strip, stub, bow-tie, loop, slot, etc
•Experience in design and fabrication of arrayed antenna devices structures such as phased arrays, slotted array and leaky-wave
•The ability to work in a close-knit R&D team, to self-direct investigations, and to act in organic leadership roles within the team in areas of strength
•Strong numerical modeling skills, including familiarity with MATLAB, and Mathematica
Desired skills / experience:Experience with on-wafer (thin/thick film, Si-CMOS, photolithography, etc) fabrication technologies, and microwave materials and substrates
•Experience in analog and digital circuit design, and multi-layer PCB layout and fabrication
•Experience with communication antennas and archtectures such as those for WiFi or Cellular communications
Qualifications:
•PhD or MS Degree in Electrical Engineering, ECE, or Physics
•Relevant thesis work plus 2 years’ experience (or Master plus 5 years) within industry or an applied research position |
