Recycling General Manager

Job Description
The Recycling General Manager is responsible for overseeing the safe and efficient operation of a scrap metal recycling yard, including the supervision of employees engaged in the daily intake, processing and shipment of ferrous and non-ferrous scrap metals.

Key Responsibilities:

Manage incoming and on-hand material cost to ensure maximum spread per ton processed and sold.

Direct the activities of yard personnel to include training, scheduling, assigning tasks, evaluating performance, and administering progressive discipline as appropriate. Directly supervise positions including but not limited to: equipment operators, maintenance personnel, scale operators, CDL drivers, purchasing agents and administrative personnel.

Manage logistics of outgoing material by securing adequate rail and/or truck transportation to meet customer orders. Maximize freight utilization by ensuring rail cars are loaded to capacity.

Develop strategic plans to achieve objectives for efficient yard utilization, material separation, labor costs, preventative maintenance programs, housekeeping, safety and environmental initiatives.

Consistently grow market share by understanding local customers and identifying new sources of incoming material.

Recognize opportunities to improve equipment, people and processes; submit appropriate improvement suggestions for management approval with sufficient detail to justify cost.

Ensure compliance with all Environmental, Safety, Health and other Company policies, procedures and requirements. Establish and maintain comprehensive safety programs and procedures.

Perform additional duties and assignments as instructed by supervisor.

Requirements:

Education: High School Diploma or equivalent required; University/college degree preferred.

Experience: 3 years experience in a manufacturing/industrial environment preferred;
experience with metal scrap recycling or steel production strongly preferred.

License: Valid driver’s license with acceptable driving record required.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Must have knowledge of OSHA regulations and safety standards.

Must have the ability to motivate staff and effectively accomplish tasks through others.

Must be proficient in the use of Microsoft Office products and possess the ability to learn various in-house computer software.

Must have knowledge of basic accounting principles and the ability to read and understand P & L statements.

Experience in the operation and maintenance of various types of heavy equipment including but not limited to: balers, shears, forklifts, cranes, loaders and shredders preferred.

Experience and knowledge in identifying, sorting and/or processing scrap ferrous and non-ferrous metals including but not limited to: copper, aluminum, brass, stainless steel, bronze, and titanium strongly preferred.
