Role Purpose/Accountabilities:
*Provide technical assistance to scientists within the BioAnalytics team in the area of biochemistry and/or small molecule analytics
*Assisting BioAnalytics team members in the design and implementation of experimental plans.
*Execute experimental plans with timeliness and high quality
*Development, optimization and validation of biochemical or biological assays in order to detect and quantify specific proteins or small molecules in plant and microbial tissues/extracts
*Collect and analyze plant tissue extracts for the activity and/or quantity of particular enzymes/proteins and/or small molecules of interest
*Recombinant protein expression and purification
*Routine maintainence of BioAnalytics equipment including flushing of FPLCs and calibration of spectrophotometers
*Data analysis and communication of results to supervisor
Knowledge, Skills & Experience: Critical Knoeledge:
*Minimum of a Bachelor's degree in Biochemistry, Biotechnology or a related field.
*Background in general biochemistry or analytical/wet bench chemistry; experience with proteins is essential
*This role requires an understanding of the principles of protein purification, enzyme kinetics, principles of assay development and validation, and considerations when working with proteins and biological samples. An understanding of principles of chromatography (preparative and analytical) is also desirable to the role.
*An understanding of basic statistics for experiment design and data analysis is desirable.
Critical experience:
*Critical skills/experience includes:-
*Recombinant protein expression and purification-
*HPLC and FPLC experience-
*Biochemical or molecular assay development-
*Preparation of extracts from biological matrices for subsequent analysis of proteins or small molecules-
*Experience in a variety of biochemical techniques to include, but not limited to, SDS-PAGE, Western blotting, UV/Vis spectroscopy, enzyme assays and analysis of enzyme kinetics
*Proficiency with Microsoft Word and Excel
*Beneficial to the role:-
*Experience working with unstable proteins -
*Experience with plant systems (whole plants and/or plant cell systems)-
*Familiarity with Kaleidagraph, GraphPad, or other graphing/data analysis software
