Job Description | The Scientist I – Cell Biologist is responsible for experimental biology research focused on cardiomyocyte cell and molecular physiology. This individual focuses principally on development and implementation of in vitro experimental systems applied to evaluation of candidate therapeutics and cardiomyocyte mechanism of action studies, development of mammalian cell-based assays, biochemical and other bio-analytical methods and biomarker discovery and/or assay development. The Scientist I – Cell Biologist also plays an important role within Acorda R&D as an intellectual leader of efforts to evaluate, design and implement successful research strategies that contribute to drug development projects.
*Essential Duties and Responsibilities: include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
•Initiates, directs and executes cardiomyocyte-focused technology development projects based upon cell and molecular biology and biochemistry approaches.
•Derives and maintains primary and immortalized cell lines.
•Analyzes therapeutic candidates and other materials to determine molecular mechanism including toxic or non –toxic properties, binding and efficacy.
•Assists with developing assays including enzyme activity measurements, ELISAs, receptor binding assays and cell-based bioactivity assays.
•Participates in activities such as RNA isolation, polymerase chain reaction-based methods, design and construction of cDNAs, engineered proteins and DNA vectors for recombinant expression of proteins, and other standard molecular biology techniques.
•Assists with creation of experimental designs and analysis strategies.
•Helps establish tests to demonstrate protocol performance.
•Participates in and conducts troubleshooting of molecular biology and cell culture steps in clinical sample processing, sequence data analysis and validation.
Education and/or Experience:
•Bachelors’ degree in Biology, or related scientific discipline, with ten to twelve years of progressive experience within the biotechnology / pharmaceutical field required.
•Master’s degree or Ph.D. in Biology or related scientific discipline with a minimum of two-five years of progressive experience within the biotechnology / pharmaceutical field preferred.
•Must possess broad-based knowledge of cell biology, biochemistry and related analytical techniques including polymerase chain reaction, gene expression analysis, cell-based immunoassays, stable transfection and cell culture.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
•The Scientist I may supervise Research Associates.
Qualifications:
•Prior experience in experimental biology approaches focused on in vitro studies of cardiomyocyte cell physiology.
•Must be able to maintain broad knowledge of state-of-the-art principles and theories.
•Familiarity with or experience in gene expression analysis and/or proteomics research is preferred.
Computer Skills:
•Must be proficient in MS Office Suite.

Other Skills and Abilities:
•Excellent oral and written communication skills are necessary.
•Basic understanding of biostatistics is required.
•Must have ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously and effectively contribute to project teams.
•This individual must have a high level of initiative, independence and the ability to work under minimal supervision, in a fast-paced environment.
•Ability to work both independently and in a collaborative team setting.
