At Synthetic Genomics, Inc., we are dedicated to developing and commercializing genomic-driven solutions to address global challenges. We are currently seeking a Scientist, Metabolic Engineering to join our fast-growing, dynamic and collaborative team in La Jolla, CA.
This Scientist will focus on the construction and optimization of novel bacterial hosts for hydrocarbon bioprocessing. Activities include design and implementation of strain engineering strategies, genetic screens/selections, and gene manipulation/regulation.
Required Skills
With direction from senior leadership, develop and execute research plans towards engineering and optimizing bacterial hosts for hydrocarbon bioprocessing.
Proven expertise in the genetic manipulation of microbial organisms using modern molecular biology approaches.
Familiarity producing and leveraging omics data to develop research targets and characterize outcomes resulting from metabolic engineering efforts.
Design and execution of high throughput genetic selection/screens
Demonstrated track record in developing improved microbial strains through directed and classical strain improvement approaches
Effectively conduct and manage experimental data analysis and interpretation, and make appropriate recommendations based on the results
Comply with Synthetic Genomics company policies including observance of US and California laws and regulations.
Ensure that all company policies and safety practices are followed
Required Experience
Ph.D. in Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Microbiology, Genetics or a related field with 1+ years R&D experience in an industry or an academic lab.
Proven experience with metabolic pathway engineering and knowledge of microbial physiology and genetics.
Development and evaluation of genetically engineered strains.
Experience in classical strain improvement methods preferred
Preferred experience with anaerobic and/or hydrocarbon utilizing organisms.
Demonstrates initiative in implementing new ideas related to assigned projects or work.
Must exhibit excellent communication skills and a broad knowledge of the company’s technologies. Able to distill and relay complex scientific concepts to a variety of members within the organization.
Uses professional concepts in accordance with company objectives to solve complex problems in creative and effective ways.
Works on complex problems in which analysis of situations or data requires an in-depth evaluation of various factors
Ability to exercise judgment within broadly defined practices and policies in selecting methods, techniques, and evaluation criteria for obtaining results
Requires high level of scientific development and knowledge for new concepts that is typically based on an advanced level of education
Excellent communication skills.
