Job Description
The Scientist is responsible for planning, designing and running experiments for the purpose of assay and sample preparation development and translation. The primary focus is to assist with the transition of research results to useful and manufacturable products, developing core Biochemistry competencies and translating to the digital microfluidic platform.

This position is involved in day to day activities in the laboratory working under both prescribed and novel procedures (protocols, standard operating procedures, methods, etc.) by carefully documenting experimental setup and results, assisting with developing and filing intellectual property; supporting product development and research; effectively interpreting and defending analytical data and reports; reporting results in a timely manner, communicating with team members on results; and exercising independent judgment within the constraints of the project. The position demands team-oriented execution of time-dependent experiments. Thus, the candidate must be organized with data collection, meeting presentations and composing study reports.

Duties and Responsibilities

85% Design, plan and implement assays for the screening and detection of DNA polymorphisms, infectious agents and preparation of DNA libraries for next generation sequencing on a microfluidic device. Assay development activities include purification of nucleic acids from complex materials, creating calibration strategies and determining assay precision and accuracy.

10% Provide technical assistance and training to stakeholders, scientists and engineers. This can include training interns or scientists, or distributing my experience to other scientists who have a need for it.

5% Writing, meetings, patent searches, company research, and other miscellaneous activities.

Qualifications

Demonstrates a sense of urgency to support project needs and product development and meet deadlines.

Excellent oral communication skills to clearly explain complex issues and progress reports to a variety of audiences across functions and across levels.

Excellent written communication skills to provide comprehensive progress reports.

Independent skills in experimental design, implementation, troubleshooting, and data analysis.

Ability to think and work independently as well as part of a team.

High integrity, insightful, passionate, industrious, and highly intelligent.

Must be a creative, detail oriented person with strong analytical skills.

Ability to thrive in a multidisciplinary team environment is essential.

Ability to work in a biosafety level 2 environment is required. Training and immunization or immunization waiver required.

Education and Experience


BS, MS in Biology, Biochemistry, Chemistry or related field with 5 or more years of industry experience preferred.

Significant experience in molecular biology including molecular diagnostic assay
development for pharmacogenomic polymorphisms and infectious agent testing, nucleic acid purification.

Cartridge based assay development a plus.
