Senior Commercial Underwriter

Job Description
BASIC PURPOSE:

The main purpose of this position is to generate new commercial business by the acceptance or rejection of commercial insurance risks based on Hastings Mutual product and coverage guidelines and maintain commercial business written to ensure profitability and growth.


PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:
1.Responsible for adhering to HMIC’s behavior standard which is to maintain a positive work atmosphere by acting and communicating in a manner so that you get along with customers, clients, co-workers and management.
2.May be assigned as a geographical unit team leader, coordinate daily team underwriting activities to achieve departmental goals.
3.Responsible for daily technical development and coaching of underwriters/tech(s) within assigned team.
4.Review, approve, and process applications and changes which are acceptable in relation to underwriting guidelines.
5.Responsible for demonstrated understanding of all commercial products, pricing, and coverages.
6.Interpretation and understanding of authority level, guidelines, and additional underwriting resource material such as PAAS, IRMI, Best Hazard Guide, ISO Manual.
7.Serve as a technical resource for others.
8.Effective and efficient communication with Home Office personnel intra/inter department(s), as well as outside vendors, and statistical reporting entities (WC Bureau).
9.Demonstrated effective and efficient negotiation/communication with agency force within team geographically assigned.
10.Demonstrated working knowledge and the ability to analyze information from mainframe production system, OnBase Imaging/Workflow, Claim Center, and CFoMs.
11.Responsible for adhering to all Information Security policies/practices including reporting any security breaches, and complying with HMIC password management and PC locking policies.



NON-CRITICAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:
1.Duties and responsibilities may be added, deleted, or changed at any time at the discretion of management, formally or informally, either verbally or in writing.
2.Continual development of technical and leadership skills through IIA/CPCU coursework, seminars, and personal development materials.
3.Provide significant input in formal review process of team members’ performance.
4.To review referrals submitted by team members and provide feedback during a decision-making process.
5.Provide coverage interpretation for Claims referrals.
6.Work directly and solve problems with Accounting, Audit, Loss Control, Commercial Processing, Farm and Personal Underwriting, Financial Services, Methods, and Marketing.
7.Provide input into product pricing and development in working with R&D.
8.Work on projects, committees, and special assignments to further department goals.



QUALIFICATIONS
1.Bachelor’s degree or formal education equivalent.
2.Professional designations: Associate in Underwriting (AU), Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU) or equivalent underwriting work experience.
3.Requires occasional field and overnight travel within six states Hastings Mutual Insurance Company does business.



DIMENSIONS:
1.The Senior Commercial Lines Underwriter reports directly to the designated Commercial Underwriting Supervisor. Most days will find this person at a desk in the Home Office reviewing: applications for commercial insurance products, requests for changes to existing policies, policies due for renewal, inspections of risks or potential risks and premium audit reports. Based on Underwriting management directives, training and knowledge the underwriter decides which risks are accepted and at what price.
2.Included in the daily activities are telephone, e-mail and mail contact with agents, various field personnel and occasionally our insured customers.
3.The underwriter is a member of a team of other underwriters and technicians that service a geographic territory. Although typically assigned to specific duties, this person must be able to work effectively in a team toward achieving team goals.
4.An underwriter must be well organized and self-motivated. They must be able to make decisions and take action as appropriate and within their authority.
