Responsibilities:
- The successful candidate will be involved in legal matters covering the breadth of the East region’s assets and activities, including matters involving the region’s power plants, development projects and regulatory policy.
- Provide counsel to management and project teams in the East region on joint ventures, mergers, acquisitions, asset dispositions, and all aspects of the development of new power generation projects (including potentially natural gas pipelines, natural gas conversions, combined cycle gas and solar facility construction, etc.)
- Draft, review, interpret, and negotiate legal documents such as commercial contracts (operation and maintenance, procurement, etc.), environmental permitting documents, confidentiality agreements, power purchase agreements, EPC agreements, site access agreements, and regulatory agreements.
- Provide counsel on a wide variety of legal issues including environmental matters and procurement issues.
- Assist management on related projects as necessary such as: governmental affairs and other legislative activities; corporate revenue enhancement activities; environmental compliance matters; SEC disclosures; and participation in the leadership and strategy direction of major NRG regional projects or task forces.
- Monitor and advise management and project teams of legal developments and trends including relevant administrative or judicial decisions, or changes in relevant statutes or regulations.
- Represent NRG before courts and administrative agencies and in other forums, often working with outside counsel and/or in-house litigation counsel.
- Work with NRG’s communications group on media interface.
- Assist other NRG attorneys and regulatory affairs personnel on state, regional, and federal regulatory filings and regulatory matters, including state PUC and ISO issues.
- Assist in the preparation, review and coordination of contracts and documents concerning financings for NRG projects, including bond documents, notes and mortgages.
- Manage and supervise outside counsel within budgetary constraints; review and approve outside counsel invoices.

Qualifications:
- JD from a leading law school
- Licensed to practice law in Illinois, Massachusetts, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Maryland, New York, Connecticut, Delaware, New Jersey, or other approved state(s)
- At least 5 years of relevant experience at a major law firm or with an energy-related in-house legal department
- Significant experience advising clients in the electric generation industry is mandatory
- Energy regulatory experience (working with, for example, state PUCs and/or FERC, NYISO, ISO-NE, PJM) preferred
- Business acumen and excellent commercial judgment
- Ability to work both independently and as a team member; ability to set priorities and to respond to changing demands from multiple sources
- Willingness and ability to develop skills in new areas
- Demonstrated proficiency in a variety of relevant areas including: communication skills (verbal and written); project management skills; negotiation skills; the ability to provide a high level of client service and to do excellent work under difficult time pressures and deadlines
- Must be a hard-working, organized, intellectually curious critical thinker
- Ability to travel, generally in Northeastern states, approximately 5-10% of time
- Ability to take the lead on any responsibilities within the job description |
