| Job Description | Summary:
With little direction, performs work of maximum degree of difficulty in supervising and participating in the fabrication and testing of precision optical components.
Description of Duties:
Performs significant role in the development, coordination, execution and control of shop methods, systems, procedures, security and inventory of optics.
Consults with Principle Investigators, Program Managers, and scientific personnel on the fabrication of optical components and furnishes time and cost estimates as required.
Translates the designs of optical components into finished items which meet optical design specifications.
Organizes and directs the activities of supporting personnel, and provides them with job schedules and instructions.
Trains optical shop employees in optical fabrication and test procedures including safety precautions.
Conducts precision optical tests on optical components, and uses software analysis programs to interpret data for both qualitative and quantitative analysis.
Obtains and maintains comprehensive records on test data in order to apply test results to optical fabrication process to obtain final design figures and to provide data for final reporting.
Makes shop sketches or drawings of tooling and test systems to permit their fabrication.
Specifies and assembles sophisticated tooling and test apparatus for the fabrication and test of optical components appropriate to projects.
Prescribes procedures for the maintenance and overhaul of machine tools and supervises the overhaul, repair or modification to optical shop tooling.
Minimum Qualifications:
Ten years of experience in polishing and testing lenses, mirrors, flats and aspheres.
High school education with course work in algebra and trigonometry, supplemented by some college, trade or technical school training in related field or equivalent.
Additional Minimums:
Comprehensive knowledge of optical principles, practices and techniques, along with some knowledge of the principles, practices and theories of management.
Comprehensive skill in applying optical grinding, polishing and figuring techniques to optical components.
Use and knowledge of specialized optical testing procedures, software and instrumentation.
Comprehensive skill in operating precision optical instruments.
Experienced leader with directing work teams.
