Senior Photonics Engineer

Job Description
This is a full-time, product development position at Thorlabs-Ann Arbor (TAA), a wholly owned subsidiary of Thorlabs, Inc. The charter of TAA is to design, develop, and manufacture leading edge photonics and opto-electronics products in concert with the broad technical base of Thorlabs’ other business units. TAA is committed to a customer-centered strategy, and is an active member of the Michigan photonics R&D community.

Responsibilities:
· Conceptualize and justify new product ideas; interact with Sales & Marketing function
· Prototype, develop, test & qualify new products for manufacturing
· Create budgets and schedules for new product developments
· Interact with customers for new ideas and technical support
· Set-up and manage photonics development laboratories
· Maintain documentation for the product development process
· Create assembly and test work instructions; train personnel
· Design products suitable for lean manufacturing techniques
· Verify & test product designs with theoretical models and simulations
· Specify & purchase all parts and equipment required; interact with vendors
· Write support documentation, manuals, application notes
· Write and negotiate product specifications
· Report progress with periodic summary presentations

Skills/Qualifications:

· MS or PhD in Optics, Physics, EE or related field
· 5+ years of photonic product development (laboratory) experience
(Lasers, detectors, fiber-optics, oscilloscopes, network & spectrum analyzers, etc.)
· Ability to design and create custom test and data collection systems a plus
· Familiarity with LabView, data collection and analysis a plus
· Experience with optical simulation software (e.g. Zemax, Fred, ASAP, ray/beam propagation)

· Experience with electrical simulation and layout software (e.g. HFSS, ADS, Altium, Spice, etc.)
This includes high frequency design and analysis
· Familiarity with mechanical design software (e.g. Solidworks or AutoCad)
Finite element type modelling for thermal and/or stress analysis a plus
· Comfortable with fusion of optical, electrical, and mechanical design elements
· Experience with high-reliability and/or hermetic products a plus
· Knowledge of high frequency time & frequency domain testing to 100GHz
· Experience with die level semiconductor design and development
· Strong problem solving and design of experiment (DOE) skills
· Candidate must be detail oriented, highly organized, & able to document work
· Candidate must have excellent written and oral communication skills
