Job Description | The Center for Immunology and Infectious Diseases at SRI International invites applications for a Senior Scientist level who will establish a vigorous program in virology in our Shenandoah Valley laboratory facility in Harrisonburg Virginia. Candidates with expertise in DNA viruses, retroviruses, or positive sense RNA viruses are especially of interest to compliment existing virology programs in the Center , but investigators focused on viral replication, viral pathogenesis, antiviral therapeutic or vaccine discovery and development are invited to apply. Applicants are expected to have an internationally recognized research program, an excellent track record in obtaining extramural funding, a commitment to academic excellence, and an expansive vision of infectious diseases.
Responsibility of the position will include (i) expansion through securing government, commercial and foundation funding to establish new cutting edge basic research programs (ii) assisting in building a pipeline of drug discovery programs for anti-viral therapeutic agents or vaccines by identification of biological targets, or protective correlates. We are seeking an enthusiastic, flexible person who enjoys working with professionals at all levels in basic and translational research, in an environment that includes collaborators and clients in pharmaceutical, biotechnology, academia, and government sectors.
Objectives:
•Management of P&L through government grants and contracts, commercial 'fee for service' work and internal and external therapeutic and vaccine discovery partnerships.
•Ability to identify and effectively pursue internal and external funding streams to meet short term revenue and profitability targets as well as long term strategic growth goals.
•Listens to internal (SRI) and external needs and determines appropriate actions.
•Be recognized as a leader in their areas of expertise, representing the Center and the Institute at national and international conferences in their area of research interest

Qualifications
•Extramurally-funded researcher with international reputation in a field related to immunology and infectious diseases.
•Doctoral degree in Microbiology, Immunology or related discipline.
•Minimum of eight to ten years of professional experience in basic and applied research in virology
•Knowledge of the academic system including proposal writing is highly important.
•Ability to apply fundamental discoveries to translational challenges in virology
•Good problem solving and conflict resolutions skills.
•Excellent written and oral communication skills essential.
•Familiarity with high throughput assay development is also helpful. |
