Job Summary

Manage an assigned underwriting territory, including underwriting new business to achieve profitable premium growth. Identify sales opportunities and manage agency relationships.

Roles and Responsibilities

Underwrite new business and ensure profitable premium and policies in force growth.
Make sound risk and pricing decisions that achieve profitable loss ratios.
Review insurance applications to evaluate, classify, and determine appropriate policy limits, coverage terms, conditions, and pricing to determine acceptability within company guidelines and within letter of underwriting authority.
Oversee territory, including, agency management, appointing new agents, agency termination recommendations, and developing and managing relationships.
Travel frequently, including overnight travel, to visit agencies.
Market products and services to agency plant for the purposes of producing new business opportunities.
Achieve customer service standard of 90% or better meeting agency’s need by dates.
Document underwriting file to support acceptability and pricing in accordance with company guidelines.
Provide detailed issuance instructions to ensure policy is delivered consistent with quoted terms and conditions and in accordance with established guidelines relative to policy construction.
Review mid-term endorsement requests for acceptability.
Order and review inspections to confirm accounts written are consistent with preliminary underwriting information and take action when the inspection reveals unacceptable risk characteristics.
Determine if facultative reinsurance is needed and if so, factor reinsurance cost in gross pricing and complete appropriate file documentation to ensure proper reporting / accounting.
Utilize various underwriting tools to determine acceptable risk characteristics, accurate classifications, insurance to value, calculate rates, etc.
Support other underwriters as assigned when other underwriters are traveling or out on vacation / sick time.
Professional Qualifications (knowledge, skills, experience, education/ certifications)

Demonstrated success in commercial lines property casualty insurance businesses.
Surplus lines underwriting experience is highly preferred.
Basic knowledge of computer programs in a Windows environment, including Word, Excel and E-mail is required.
Prior experience working in a paperless environment, including familiarity with on-line underwriting tools is preferred (e.g. SAGE, Silver Plume, Reference Connect)
Bachelor's degree and six plus years related insurance experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Advanced professional insurance coursework (i.e., CPCU, ASLI, AU) or completion of other-insurance related classes is preferred.
