Senior Underwriter - Commercial Lines

POSITION SUMMARY:

This position evaluates complicated and in depth applications for new business, renewals and certain endorsements for acceptability in accordance with company guidelines and standards, utilizing underwriting and risk management techniques. In addition, this position works with the Underwriting Supervisor in managing the daily operations of the underwriting unit. The position mandates successful completion of all requirements of Citizens Underwriting School, which includes obtaining an overall passing score.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Model ethical behavior and execute job responsibilities in accordance with Citizens core values and ethics policies.

Approve or reject risks and / or structure coverage within approved authority level, as well as perform transactions according to latest corporate standards, manual of rates, guidelines and procedures, using consistent and efficient risk-based underwriting principles.

Provide technical advice to agents, processing staff and underwriting staff based on the latest corporate manual, guidelines and procedures, and on consistent risk-based underwriting philosophy in all products and activities.

Provide support to Management by leading on various projects, to include but not limited to backup support in handling claims depositions as related to underwriting guidelines and procedures as needed.

Research and resolve concerns with both internal and external customers interacting via phone and/or in writing and, when needed, provide recommendations to Underwriting Manager to resolve escalated cases.

May supervise staff in absence of the underwriting supervisor.

Provide support to management on reports and workflow issues as needed, and in the training and development of staff that consistently promotes Citizens risk-based underwriting philosophy.

Work with supervisor to establish or amend underwriting procedures based on changes to underwriting manual, rates, guidelines and procedures.

Initiate action to cancel a policy, modify coverage form or limit based on consistent and efficient risk-based underwriting.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

Effective analytical and problem solving skills with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.

Strong communication, negotiation and presentation skills.

Thorough knowledge of commercial insurance underwriting and processing principles and practices and ability to analyze and interpret commercial insurance coverage, procedures, guidelines and reports.

Proficient in Microsoft Office, including Microsoft Word and Excel.

REQUIRED EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

Associates degree, OR 2 years relevant experience (such as insurance underwriting operations, agency, mortgage insurance) OR a combination of college education and relevant experience equivalent to 2 years.

4 or more years experience in property insurance underwriting operations with 2 or more years as a Commercial Lines underwriter.

Within 180 days of employment, must successfully complete all requirements of Citizens Underwriting School which includes obtaining an overall passing score.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Bachelor’s degree

Possession of IIA Certificate in General Insurance or equivalent insurance designation such as CIC, CPCU, 2-20, 6-20 or 4-40

5 or more years experience in property insurance underwriting operation with 3 years as a
Commercial Lines property insurance underwriter

Thorough knowledge of Citizens underwriting procedures, manuals, policy administration and workflow applications

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
This position requires the ability to sit for long periods of time, hear and converse over the telephone, and key frequently on a computer (2 or more hours per day).
