The Structural Engineer performs various design, proposal and troubleshooting/inspecting activities on heavy bulk material handling equipment, including preparing all of the necessary technical data to design, modify or retrofit heavy bulk material handling equipment, reviewing the contract requirements, selection of equipment designs, preparation of required calculations and specifications, and reviewing drawings as they are prepared.

• Produces technically sound designs which meet the contract requirements, good engineering practices and solves the customer's needs and/or problems.

• Provides information, guidance and assistance to the structural drafting personnel for the production of drawings. Reviews drawings for accuracy.

• Produces work within the allotted man-hours and material budgets and produces work within allotted schedule.

• Effectively coordinates work with other groups within the company and provides timely information to others.

• Reviews others’ work to ensure compatibility with the mechanical design/meets contract requirements.

• Applies working knowledge of structural engineering systems to meet customer specifications.

• Applies good knowledge of structural operations and maintenance to specified structural designs.

• Communicates effectively with the customers and/or suppliers and keeps them advised periodically on the status of the work. Delivers promised information as indicated.

• Produces technical specifications for material purchase which are accurate. Reviews vendor technical submittals for adequacy.

• Maintains awareness of current state-of-the-art technology & trends in structural engineering. Suggests product improvement idea.

• Travel (up to 25%) may be required as needed, including both domestic and international.

• Effectively prepares and present training sessions.

• Performs other miscellaneous duties as requested.

Requirements:

• Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil/Structural Engineering or related field (or equivalent training/experience)

• Preferred 5-10 years experience in the design of heavy equipment.

• Experience in equipment design such as Rotary Car Dumpers, train positioners, bucket wheel stacker reclaimers, rake reclaimers or similar equipment is a plus.

• Experience with AutoCad and Inventor is a plus.

• Some knowledge, understanding or experience in Mechanical Design is a plus but not required.

• Professional Engineer license is desirable but not required.

• Knowledge of structural design and building codes including, but not limited to: AISC, AWS, ACSE, FEM, ISO as it relates to bulk materials handling equipment and machinery.

• Knowledge of foundations and concrete structure is expected, as well as operation and maintenance procedures.

• Understanding of shop manufacturing practices and field erection procedures along with experience in structural computer analysis and modeling is preferred.

• Solid computer skills, including Microsoft Office and CADD.

• Excellent communication (both written and oral) and effective interpersonal skills are required as the employee will have interactions with both internal and external customers and suppliers.

• Must be able to effectively discuss, explain and coordinate designs with drafters and other disciplines cross-functionally.

• Must be able to function effectively both as a member of a team and as an individual contributor.

• Ability to complete assigned tasks in the time allotted with minimal supervision.

• Highly motivated individual with the ability to work under stress and meet tight deadlines.

• Must be capable of effectively and accurately working on several projects at one time

• Good organizational skills and ability to prioritize tasks in a fast paced environment.

• Regularly required to sit; use hands and fingers; reach with hands and arms; and effectively communicate with others.

• Occasionally required to stand, walk, and climb or balance.

• Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

• Visual acuity is required to read and produce accurate engineering materials.

• Required use of keyboards, telephones, copiers, fax, visits and movement through shops, and travel experiences.

• The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 40 pounds, including climbing up and down multiple flights by way of stairs or ladders when working in the field, as well as ability to react to audible warnings when working in the field.
