UNDERWRITING SUPERVISOR

JOB SUMMARY

Manage a territory averaging between $20 million to $50 million in written premium. Be supportive of the underwriting function by handling file referrals, questions and training of the underwriting staff. Monitor progress through file reviews and Synergy reports. Assist underwriters with territory management in order to optimize growth while maintaining underwriting discipline to keep loss ratios at profitable levels. Monitor underwriter workloads and make adjustments as needed. Provide a direct link of communication between the underwriters and the underwriting manager and/or branch manager. Work with the support staff supervisor to make sure the teams run as efficiently as possible. Interview new underwriting and rating candidates if the need arises. Perform employee reviews. Assist in salary budgeting and administration. Take on special tasks and projects as assigned. Depending on the needs of the branch, individual may directly underwrite for certain agents or specific accounts.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Coordinate and assist in production, underwriting activities, training and workflow for all team members.

Exercise underwriting authority and establish underwriting authorities for team members.

Coordinate maintenance of rates, rules and forms, including gathering and analyzing information.

Monitor and report to underwriting manager the underwriting quality and team results; develop and implement actions as required.

Evaluate, develop and administer annual performance appraisals and salary recommendations, including annual operating plan. Monitor team performance; document and discuss performance related issues as necessary.

Coordinate and assist in customer/agency relations including agency review and implementation of action. Travel required. Must have a valid driver’s license.

Assist in identification of new production sources.

Regular attendance.

Perform other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES

Broad knowledge of insurance coverages, analytical, effective communication, decision-making, problem-solving skills, plan and organize. Must be able to plan and organize. Supportive of and adaptable to change, and have excellent people and leadership skills. Coaching and evaluation skills, ability to motivate and develop skills with staff. Tactful and diplomatic.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Four-year college degree or equivalent insurance experience with five years commercial underwriting experience. Must possess ability to analyze and resolve problems, coordinate, plan and organize. Be knowledgeable of insurance coverages, communicate effectively, supportive of and adaptable to change, and have excellent people and leadership skills. Completion of AU and/or CPCU program is desirable.

EQUIPMENT

Computer, telephone and calculator skills necessary.
